J. River Media Center offers a comprehensive media player for Audio, Video, images, and television. It features a media network that features tools for remote control within the reach of the network. It also features data paths within the program and enables support for lossless media formats like APE, FLAC, Windows Media Lossless, and Apple Lossless. It also supports media formats from the general to not so commonly used formats. It can also connect to media streaming websites like Last.FM, Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube.

A big plus for me is native ASIO support, which is the driver of choice for professional Windows users. This allows JRiver Media Center to stream directly through my interface and into the mastering DAC of my choice. It can also play from RAM and help with speaker calibration for stereo or 5.1, and it even includes analysis tools such as spectrum and oscilloscope displays. When I was testing the Benchmark DAC2 HGC converter [Tape Op #97], I was able to play DSD files from Media Center straight to the Benchmark. While not all DACs support such acrobatics (only Mytek and Benchmark presently come to mind), this feature alleviates the need to buy a dedicated DSD player.

Since it is a “media” player, it includes many functions that may not apply to record engineers: image galleries, video playback, network player, home theatre, etc. I consider those to be all bonuses. I like that mix engineers can plug a USB drive into my computer and audition a 24bit, 96 kHz file without converting and importing it into a DAW session. Media Center also makes a great party shuffler that uses high-quality sources as opposed to lossy compressed files. I don’t know how I got along without this on my PC. And now Mac users can get in on the fun. A free, 30-day demo is available for download. Need a good media player? JRiver Media Center was one of the easiest reviews I’ve had the pleasure of conducting… J River turned out to be the right player for our media playback uses because it does about anything you could need to get high-quality audio from the PC. It’s easy to use too. So what’s the problem with the old Windows Media Center and why did we switch to J River?

My personal preference is for the Purity skin; it has a mostly black, darkish look that works well in an often dark room that doubles as a home theater, and keeps the computer monitor’s display from dominating the room while still allowing a clear view of your current music selections. I also prefer the Genre and Album views; in the Album view, you see row after row of your album covers arranged in just about any manner of your choosing (of course, alphabetical is the default), and some sliders allow you to adjust the size of the album covers to your liking.

As for my associated gear outside of my HTPC, my AV preamp was the Integra DHC 80.2, my amplifiers Crown Audio’s XLS 2000, and my speakers Tekton Design’s Pendragon, with Noble Fidelity L-85 LCRS in-ceiling speakers for rears. All electronics were connected via Monoprice cabling. For display duties, I used my Panasonic 3D plasma, as well as my Anthem LTX-500 D-ILA projector. For remote duties, I used both my Motorola Droid Razr Maxx and my newly-acquired Google Nexus tablet.

J River makes all of this bit-perfect playback effortless. And there are almost limitless tweaking options available for enthusiasts such as you and myself. I like it. So, long story short… I bought the player before my trial ever got close to running out. Which is how these things are intended to work I think. You download J River Media center, use it for a bit, and if the software is excellent, you buy it. I doubt JRiver has many customers that don’t buy the software. I think it’s a bargain. I can’t believe how long I lived without it. Here’s the link to J River’s site so you can try it out for free.

I often need to audition audio files or compare different sources. I used to have a generic session in my DAW for this, but that became unmanageable. There were simply too many sample-rates, formats, and variables to rely on a single generic file. Fortunately, I found a great application that offers high-quality playback and a lot more. JRiver Media Center is one of the most comprehensive audio/video players available. Originally Windows-only, a Mac OS version was released recently.
